In some rooms, like kitchens and bathrooms, carpeting is a bad idea. However, it can be a good idea to have a matt or rug in front of the sinks for a couple of reasons. If you’re doing dishes in the kitchen and have to stand there for a long time, hard floors can make your feet and legs ache.
Additionally, spilt water from sinks can make hard floors slippery and damage certain flooring materials after a while. Having a mat in front of your sinks prevents water from landing on your floors, protecting you and your family from potentially harmful slips and your floors from water damage.
Having carpeting is also a generally bad idea in any room with doors leading directly outside. When the weather is rainy and wet, mud and other contaminants get tracked in on people’s shoes. That can damage carpets, but hard floors tend to be a bit more resilient. However, having a matt behind the door can be nice and give people a place to wipe their feet and take their shoes off before entering the house.
